Hand Warmers Allowed on Planes? Here’s What You Need to Know

Are hand warmers permitted on planes?

Are hand warmers allowed on airplanes? According to the Transportation Security Administration, they are not. The TSA cites safety concerns as their rationale for this policy – hand warmers can emit lethal fumes if ignited and taken into an airplane cabin. Despite this warning, many people still bring them on planes, believing that they pose no risk. However, in 2007 a passenger on an American Airlines flight was killed when his hand warmer exploded in his pocket. Since then, the TSA has increased its enforcement of this policy and passengers who refuse to leave them at the checkpoint may be subject to fines or even arrest.

Let’s talk about authority!

Are Hand Warmers TSA Approved?

Hand warmers are not typically a category of items that are screened by the TSA. Depending on the brand and model, hand warmers can either be approved or not approved for travel.

Some hand warmers, like those made by Thermos, are specifically designed to be air-tight and leak-proof, which makes them ideal for traveling. Other brands, such as Cabela’s, do not have the same quality assurance and may not be as leak-proof. In general, if a hand warmer is designed to fit in the palm of your hand and does not emit fluid when squeezed, it is most likely TSA approved.

However, if you are unsure whether or not your hand warmer will be allowed through security, it is best to avoid bringing it with you on your flight.
